About Matsue Castle

Matsue Castle was built by Horio Yoshiharu during the Edo period and has remained intact, preserving its original appearance. It is one of the twelve remaining castle towers in Japan and is also known as Chidori Castle. In 2015, it was designated a national treasure. From the watchtower on the top floor, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Matsue City and Lake Shinji.

In the Izumo area, large drums have long been called “do.”
Every year, on the third Sunday of October, Matsue City hosts the “Matsue Festival Dogyoretsu”, a parade where these do drums are placed on their sides and placed on floats with wheels and roofs, and are played as they are pulled through the streets.
During a special two-day weekday event, visitors are invited to experience the beating of these do drums themselves.
